Philippine military officials have vowed to destroy the Abu Sayyaf extremist group. This happened after 18 Filipino soldiers killed in vicious battle on the island of Basilan.
"After we grieve for our soldiers, we will continue the fight," said Philippine Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and military officials in a joint statement quoted by the Daily Mail, Sunday (10/04/2016).
While the Philippine Army Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Eduardo Ano said the army aimed to crush the Abu Sayyaf. "Especially now that we have discovered the exact location of the group," he said.
Earlier, a fierce battle going on in the countryside on the island of Basilan. 10-hour battle that killed 18 Philippine soldiers and wounded 53 soldiers. Pertempuranitu also killed five members of the Abu Sayyaf, which one of them known to have come from Morocco.
Filipino forces sent to Basilan yesterday true to kill or capture Abu Sayyaf commander Isnilon Hapilon.
The Abu Sayyaf was founded in 1991 in Basilan, about 550m (880 km) south of Manila. The group has pledged allegiance to ISIS led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in July 2014.
